Last week we headed to the Outer Banks for a beach vacation and relaxation before baby brother arrives. We had fabulous weather and a great location right on the beach. Austin really was excited about the beach and insisted on walking over to see the ocean a few nights just to say 'night night ocean'. We didn't travel far from our rental, but definitely managed to fit in some fun activities all week long!
Taking in the view when we arrived:
We were blessed with beautiful warm weather nearly the entire week, and since it was pre-season still the beaches were nearly empty. For the first time, Austin really seemed to enjoy playing in the sand...digging holes, burying hands and feet, and watching the sand crabs crawl in and out of their holes.
The sun and the sand definitely tired him out...although don't be too fooled, this resting little guy only lasted about 2 minutes and then he was ready for more. We definitely had to go inside and force naps so that he wasn't too much of a crazy kiddo.
A short walk away down the beach was a perfect little take out food stand complete with ice cream and milkshakes too. We had to stop ourselves from going every day because it was tasty and convenient!
We stayed in Kitty Hawk, but took a little trip up to Duck to walk the boardwalk and enjoy pizza at our favorite sound side restaurant. Austin loved the boardwalk and ran nearly the entire way yelling 'daddy come on, mommy come on. No go slow!!'.
We also took a break from the beach to hit up some local playgrounds. Austin surprised us with his skills and was quite the climber!
Perhaps the best part of the trip was a tip from a local mom we met at the Outer Banks Brewing station. She told us about a sound side beach behind the dunes where there are no waves and the water is super shallow for quite a ways out into the sound. We went and Austin had an awesome time. He was intimidated by the ocean waves on the beach side and didn't do much water play - but on the sound side he played for several hours!
