Week 10

This week we had our 2 month pediatricain appointment.  Austin is coming in around the 87th percentile in weight, weighing in at 13lbs 15oz!!  Such a big boy!  He got his first shots this week, which ended up going pretty well.  He definitely cried and cried at the doctor's office afterwards, but no crazy reactions afterwards, and the rest of the day was pretty normal.

The newest thing this week is that we started introducing formula.  My original goal was to breastfeed for the first 3 months, and then see how things go from there when I go back to work.  Although, I've learned over the past 2 weeks that I don't really pump enough to replace a bottle feeding when Mike's given Austin a bottle of breast milk.  Given that, we thought it would be good to see if he'll take a bottle of formula in anticipation of eventually tapering off of breastfeeding.  I was a bit more emotional about it than I thought I would be, but I'm happy to have exclusively breastfed him for 10 weeks.  Yesterday he took his first formula bottle like a champ - downed 6 ounces without any fuss...a first in bottle feeding for him!  Ultimately, I think its a good transition we're starting to make.  He'll still get breastmilk a few times a day, and we still have a bunch in the freezer to last us a while as we alternate feedings with formula.  I'm looking forward to the ability to get back some time to myself, and having other people be able to help feed Austin.  I'm sure it will take a while to stop breastfeeding completely, and by that point he'll probably be starting some solids.

Yesterday we ventured downtown and visited Mike and his coworkers at the FAA.  We had such a good time walking around the national mall, grabbing some food truck lunch, and introducing Austin to everyone.  He didn't seem to mind being out and about all day, and it was a nice change of pace for our normal daily routine.  Its getting easier and easier to take him places, and I'm looking forward to getting out of the house much more before going back to work.
While I'm loving maternity leave and being able to stay home all day with our little guy, I am starting to look forward to a few things about returning to work in a few weeks.  Again, like formula feeding, getting some time back to myself will be a nice change.  We definitely have moments these days where we wish we had family closer by so that we could get out of the house alone for a little bit every once in a while.  I think the only time both of us have been together and away from Austin was a brief 5 minute trip into Safeway when Ellen was in the car with Austin in the parking lot!!  Needless to say, we will definitely be taking advantage of a few grandma/grandpa visits later this summer.  But if anyone else out there is reading this and wants to come visit and babysit for a night or two, we'd love to host you. :)

Alright, the little guy is waking from his nap.  Next week is our first plane trip, so I'm sure we'll have some stories to share!!
