But perhaps the best part of the show was the Alabama Boys comedy act. These guys actually put on a show in a Piper Cub plane where the main character pretends to take off without his instructor and attempts to fly a plane with no training. The guy was amazing - it looked like he was almost about to crash every minute or so!! We took some videos:
In the end, he manages to land the plane on a pick up truck driving down the runway. It was impressive!
Interesting facts about the College Park Airport: 1) In 1909 Wilbur Wright taught Lieutenants Humphreys to fly here. Humphreys became the first military pilot to solo in a government aeroplane. 2) In 1918, the Post Office Department inaugurated the first Postal Airmail Service from College Park. 3) In 1920, Emile and Henry Berliner brought their theories of vertical flight to the field and in 1924 made the first controlled helicopter flight. 4) From 1927 until 1933, the Bureau of Standards developed and tested the first radio navigational aids here for use in "blind" or bad weather flying. This was the forerunner of the modern Instrument Landing System used today by aircraft.
The next day Medtronic was hosting a summer family get-together hosted by one of the Baltimore sales reps at his in-laws house on Kent Island. Kent Island is right over the Bay Bridge past Annapolis, MD. It essentially feels like vacation the moment you cross the bridge! We sure wish we could find jobs there!
Mmmm...crabs. Okay, we didn't eat any, but its a Maryland tradition!
