Who could have guessed that the week of the Inauguration could have gotten even more fun and more special? For my 31st birthday, Mike booked a cottage in West Virginia in the town of Berkeley Springs for us to enjoy a cozy weekend! Berkeley Springs is a bizarre little historic town near the mountains that is known for its hot springs, and more specifically for being the nation's first 'Spa' destination. People as far back as George Washington (as a youth)used to frequent the town and bathe in the springs. Here's literally 'George Washington's Bathtub'...we kid you not. I think their Spa service has gotten a little more fancy since his days!
We got up Saturday with the thought of finding a fun place to hike since the weather wasn't terribly cold (i.e. warmer than Inauguration Day!). Unfortunately our plans were thwarted by a road closure that prevented us from driving up to a lookout in the nearby Cacapon State Park. Plan B was to check out a hike with a waterfall along Sleepy Creek...but again, we were thwarted by threatening signs of hunting season! So, instead we toured the area via car for the afternoon looking forward to returning in the spring. Near the end of the afternoon we drove over to the end of the Western Maryland Rail Trail which is a paved bike trail along the Potomac. We've been wanting to check it out with bikes, so we drove over and got out to take a short walk. To my surprise, Mike pulled a ring box out of his pocket and got down on one knee and proposed!! Here's us after I said 'Yes!'
The rest of the weekend was super relaxing. It helped that we had a little hot-tub on our deck overlooking the mountains and cozy town!

So much happy news in one week: Obama inaugurated and Mike and LIsa engaged! I do know that Mike has been one happy guy since Lisa came into his life. Welcome to our family, LIsa. We await details of the wedding so that we can start making our plans.
Love,
Ellen
and the ring... you HAVE to post a picture of the ring - it's like some kind of engagement rule :)
So happy for you two!
