This afternoon we braved the cold weather and crowds to attend the free inaugural concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Okay, so we didn't quite get as far as the Lincoln Memorial - as you can see in the picture there were so many people gathered that we watched from atop the hill of the Washington Monument. There were jumbotrons everywhere, so we heard and saw everything despite being a little far away. We were surprised to see that Obama and his family were actually attending the concert from the front row! Lots of celebrities came out to celebrate, and the crowds (and Obama) sang along to many classic favorites such as "Shout", "American Pie", and "This land is your land".
As we walked along the mall, we saw a crowd with a boom camera floating above it and as we approached we caught a glimpse of the recognizable white hair of CNN's Anderson Cooper!
Next to Anderson Cooper we spotted DC's version of a barrier along the side of the mall:
The number of johnny on the spots was impressive. Clearly the organizers are making sure that the inauguration is free of sanitation disasters!
Also, FBI agents were on the lookout for any other potential disasters, these guys were posted at the base of the Washington Monument:
All in all, it was a great event and we're quite happy that we decided to trek into the city. Friends of ours in St Louis have decided to drive out for Tuesday's event, so it looks like we might brave the cold and crowds again!
