First week at home

All was quiet in the house for at least a few minutes when we returned home.  We had dropped Austin off at daycare (even though it was a Saturday) while Mike picked me up and brought us home.  Tyler sleepily awaited his big brother's arrival.

Austin ran in the door and into the living room to see me, but then quickly noticed a new little baby lying on the ottoman all wrapped up in a blanket.  He immediately became a bit cautious and backed up a bit!

He was definitely curious but must have been thinking 'hmm, I'm not sure what I think about baby brother'.  We asked him about the color of his blanket and the animal on the blanket and tried to get him comfortable talking about the baby

For some reason, Austin decided that he needed to start stacking all of our couch pillows in a big pile right next to Tyler.  He was careful, but it was definitely a bit of a funny idea that he decided to run with!

.He even took out his doctor's kit and looked at baby brother's ears and told us that they were 'ok'.  It was pretty cute!

After a good 20 minutes, he wasn't so interested in baby anymore.  I think he realized that Tyler doesn't really do much and he's not too much of a threat...yet.  So, normal playtime resumed.

With a few curious peaks at him here and there:

Since Austin's a pretty big fan of birthdays these days (and often sings happy birthday to people and toys while playing) we thought it would be fun to get cupcakes and celebrate Tyler's birthday.  Austin was psyched, sang happy birthday, and blew out Tyler's candle!

Our first night at home went pretty well - Tyler was up every 2-3 hours, but that was expected.  I brought him into our room in the morning because he couldn't seem to fall back asleep and he finally passed out as I was about to get up and shower.

Day two started off with Austin opening a few gifts from 'baby brother'.  The biggest excitement was the colored tissue paper from the bag.  He played with it for a good chunk of the morning!

We got him a backpack for school (which he refuses to use), some coloring stuff, and a new playdoh set.  He seemed happy just getting some new things and being the focus of attention still!

Later that morning he even discovered Tyler's new swing and started telling us all about the animals that were decorating it.

That afternoon we were lucky enough to get a visit from Aunt Alex and Maddie and Cami.  Everyone enjoyed meeting Tyler, and Austin had a great time entertaining his cousins!

That evening we were feeling pretty good about being a family of four.  Tyler so far was pretty quiet and calm and Austin wasn't really acting out.  He finally was recovered from his nasty virus and seemed pretty happy.  We took a quick ride over to a local trail and walked with Tyler while letting Austin throw rocks into a creek...a favorite activity these days.

Oddly as we were leaving Austin got super clingy and whiney and we thought he must be acting out and wanting attention from Mike since I'm spending time with the new baby.  That was probably part of it, but as our luck would have it, we got home and discovered that once again Austin had a fever (he love to use the new thermometer himself these days)!

This time it wasn't bronchitis...nope, hand, foot and mouth disease.  It wasn't as bad as it could have been...blisters on his mouth, feet, and hands weren't too bad. But, he was miserable for a few days, lost his appetite, and was generally fussy.  By mid-week we were pretty exhausted and decided it was time to call in reinforcements - we booked Grandma a one way ticket to arrive that Thursday night to help us out.  It was definitely the right thing to do.  Austin has really enjoyed having grandma around, we've enjoyed having someone else to help entertain him and help with Tyler.

Thankfully Tyler hasn't gotten sick from any of Austin's ailments and he seems happy and calm.  He took his first look at his playmat this week, but I don't think he was too excited by it.  Looking forward to watching him grow!
