Bluebells in Bloom

So, everyone knows that April is Cherry Blossom season in DC - it drawns tons and tons of tourists every year.  What's crazy is that no one seems to know that April is also Bluebell season not too far away.  This past weekend we took a hike on the Bluebell trail in Bull Run Regional Park - thanks to a book that we got from Mike's mom called "50 Amazing Things You Must See and Do in the Greater D.C. Area".  This park is covered in acres and acres of bluebells every spring, and has been said to be a display 'unrivaled by almost anything else in the Mid-Atlantic area.'
We didn't expect much actually, but were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the hike through the park was.  And how uncrowded it was.  Of course the peak weekend was also the weekend of massive storms on the east coast, so at times the ''trail'' was more of what we would call ''a muddy river''.  But, an hour of trudging through the mud we were very happy to have been one of the lucky ones to see the Bluebells this year.  They were quite a sight to see!

Afterwards we headed over to Great Falls National Park.  This is one of our favorite spots in the DC area - lots of hiking and biking, plus some great scenic views of the Potomac River as it falls over a major series of cascades.  Neither of us really thought about how high the river would be after the recent storms - we were in for quite a surprise:

This picture really doesn't do it justice, so here's a video Mike shot on his phone:

All in all, a great spring day.  And now that the Cherry Blossom Festival is over, we are excited that our very own Cherry trees are starting to blossom!

Wow! The Virginia bluebells rival the Texas bluebonnets. And your cherry blossoms are gorgeous.

Glad you and Marty hadn't planned on kayaking on the Potomac.

Wow, those rapids are crazy. I remember Kylie being afraid to cross the walkway bridge when they were at a normal level, can't imagine how scared she would be at that day!!
